2021 IBC Accessibility and Usability for Commercial and Residential

Course Description

This seminar focuses on the minimum requirements for new or existing construction of accessible commercial buildings and residential facilities for compliance with the International Building Code® (IBC®) and ICC A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. It addresses the design, plan review and inspection of residential buildings and facilities to ensure that people with physical impairments, visual impairments and hearing impairments can use the facilities.  Attendees will participate in activities that involve questions and answers, discussion and case study, performing parts of individually and in groups.

Instructor Bio:

Kimberly Paarlberg, RA

Kimberly is a Senior Staff Architect in Technical Services with International Code Council (ICC) at their Chicago Regional office.  Her 12 plus years’ experience with ICC includes working in the plan review and code development departments.  Her responsibilities include code development secretary for the Means of Egress Committee; providing code interpretations; instructing ICC technical seminars; and authoring/reviewing instruction materials, articles and code commentary.  She is ICC´s representative for development of the referenced technical standard, ICC/ANSI A117.1 ´Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities´ and ASME 24 ‘Flood Resistant Design and Construction’.  Kim is also the secretary for the ICC 300 ‘Bleachers, Folding and Telescopic Seating, and Grandstands.’

Before joining ICC, Kimberly worked as a structural engineer and architect. She is a licensed architect in Illinois and holds an Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner certification.
